Over the years, I’ve had mixed feelings when different guys I’ve dated have sent me good morning texts.
My reactions ranged from unreasonable annoyance to mild curiosity.
I don’t like texting much and tend to get really focused on work in the morning. It can be difficult for me to get back on track after any interruptions because I have ADHD.
Sometimes I wondered, “what does he want from me this early?!”
This got worse when a guy I dated for a few weeks got mad at me for not replying back fast enough. I was busy.
I’m not the person to be with if you want immediate responses.
Eventually I was so turned off by his clinginess that I ended things.
After that, I started wondering what kind of response guys expected and hoped I didn’t fall in love with someone who was touchy about this.
Needless to say, good morning texts weren’t my thing for years until Jonathan and I started dating.
Hearing from Jonathan has always made me excited.
At first, he regularly sent me good morning texts until we hit some tough times.
Then we broke up, he moved across the country and we went no contact for a long time.
Needless to say, we both fell out of the habit of sending anything cute.
Eventually, I moved to his area, we got back together and the relationship began to grow again.
Anyway, despite having a great time together, a few years ago we hit another rocky patch. I felt neglected in our relationship and told him so.
We both don’t really enjoy texting, so that wasn’t exactly our problem.
My issue hinged on the fact that I wanted more of his presence and attention. In every way.
He explained that during the week he feels boring since all he does is eat, sleep and work.
He thought since he didn’t have anything new to say or something for us to do together until the weekend, there was no specific reason for us to be in touch.
I explained that connection isn’t about having something new to say– which seemed obvious to me but wasn’t to him.
I wasn’t looking for him to perform his new life details for me, I wanted more of his time, attention and presence.
For me, being in contact in a relationship isn’t about the content of the message, it’s about connecting with the messenger.
And we had a problem because he wasn’t present enough for me to want to keep the relationship going.
I explained that I love him and wanted our relationship, but if he wanted to keep our relationship going, he was going to have to figure out how to invest more of his time, attention and energy.
If he didn’t want that, no hard feelings. Sometimes people don’t want the same things and that’s okay.
He assured me he was still interested, apologized, agreed to do more and the discussion ended.
This got through to him because the next day, I got this:

While I was excited, I was a little afraid of getting my hopes up.
I didn’t want the fad diet equivalent to relationship change.
I wanted for us to build a life together.
Turns out that fear was unfounded.
In the years since, we have texted each other every morning.
Our relationship has gotten better in every other way also.

And that’s how I came to enjoy the ritual of sharing a good morning text.
If you want to hear my whole story, I share more about how we made our relationship better on an episode of Helena Hart’s podcast here.
